Silver Maple: The Tree Ashland City Planted Everywhere, and the Stump It Leaves

Two Planting Waves, Both Now Due

Walk the streets on the original plat around the courthouse and count the silver maples. Most of them went in as street trees in the 1930s and 1940s, on lots of a tenth to a fifth of an acre, which is roughly a quarter of the room the species actually wants.

Then there is the second wave. The subdivisions that filled in between the late 1950s and the 1980s on the ridges and the east side planted the same tree again, for the same reason anybody plants it: it grows fast, it gives shade in eight years, and it was cheap at the nursery.

So the town has two cohorts, one at ninety years old and one at fifty to sixty, arriving at their structural limits at the same time. That single fact explains a large share of the stump work in this town.

Why It Fails the Way It Does

Silver maple grows with codominant stems — two or three trunks of similar size rising from a fork low down — and the union between them frequently traps a seam of bark instead of forming sound joined wood. That included-bark union is the failure point, and it goes in a wind event with a full crown of wet leaves on it, typically in a spring storm rather than in the depth of winter.

The second problem is the wood itself. It is soft and light, it decays readily once anything gets in through a wound, and the tree hollows from the centre outward while still carrying a completely convincing canopy. A silver maple can look magnificent from the street and be a shell.

The third is the roots. They run at the surface, they lift concrete, and on the older streets around the square they are what has cracked half the original driveway aprons.

The Stump It Leaves, and What It Costs

Two things about a silver maple stump surprise people, and they pull the price in opposite directions.

It is quicker to grind than its diameter suggests. Soft wood, often hollow through the middle, means a forty-inch silver maple can come out in noticeably less time than a thirty-inch white oak from the ridge. Diameter is a poor proxy for cost here.

Against that, the buttress is enormous. The flare on a mature specimen spreads several feet wider than the trunk, and the surface roots radiate fifteen to twenty-five feet, so if a driveway apron or a walk is being replaced over the top the working area is far bigger than the stump. That is the bit that gets underestimated on a quote from somebody who has not asked what happens next in that spot.

It Sprouts, and What Actually Stops It

Silver maple regenerates from root fragments. Grind one to six inches, leave the laterals untouched, and you will have a ring of shoots coming up through the grass within a season, which people then blame on the grinder having done a poor job.

What stops it is width more than depth. Taking the buttress roots out to the point where the laterals thin down removes most of the tissue capable of pushing a bud. Depth alone does not, because the sprouting is coming from roots at the surface, not from the stump you can see.

Expect a handful of shoots anyway, because you cannot chase a twenty-foot root system out of a lawn. Mow them. A silver maple shoot with no leaves left on it has no way to feed the root behind it, and two or three passes with a mower ends it. That is also why we grind the sprouting species wider than the ones that will not come back, and why anything appearing in the ground area inside twelve months is our problem to come back for rather than yours.
