Eight tenths of an acre, a barn, and a gravel pad to work from
This plat has been filling in since 1998 and is still going, with 2004 and 2007 tied as the busiest years and houses recorded as recently as 2025. Median lot size is eight to nine tenths of an acre, which by the standards of this county is generous, and several of the parcels kept a barn or a shop from the farm the ground came out of.
That gravel pad beside the barn is the best working surface on any lot in the subdivision. It carries a machine, it does not rut, and it is usually within reach of exactly the trees people call about.
The catch is what is under the ground around it. A barn apron is not a lawn with grass on it — it is fifty years of accumulated hardware, poured concrete and gravel, and it does not show on the surface.
What Is Buried Around an Old Barn
Working near a surviving outbuilding out here we expect, and regularly find, a poured slab three or four inches under turf where a loafing shed used to be. Cut-off pipe from a stock waterer. The stubs of set posts snapped off at ground level. A gravel drive that was abandoned and seeded over, still eight inches thick under the grass.
None of that stops a job, but it does change how the first pass is taken. On the barn side of a lot we sweep, probe, and open up slowly with the operator listening rather than watching, because concrete and steel sound different long before they look different. Then we go at normal feed once we know what we are in.

Locust and Hackberry Out of the Hedgerows
The hedgerow species that got left standing when the pasture was carved up are the ones that cause trouble later. Black locust is the hardest wood on most of these properties and it does something that catches people out: cut it, and it sends up shoots from severed roots, sometimes yards away from where the tree stood.
That means a locust stump levelled at the top has not finished being a locust. To actually be done with it, the plate comes out past the buttress rather than merely down to grade, and you should still expect to mow a few shoots the first summer. Hackberry does something similar and it seeds prolifically into the same fencerows on top of it.
On the cedars in the same lines the wood is soft and fast, so those price low individually. What makes a row of them a real job is the count, not the difficulty.
Bearwallow Road Is Four Miles Long
Bearwallow Rd runs from the edge of town all the way out to the far northeast corner of the county, and addresses along it are strung out over that whole distance. When you call, give us a cross street or a landmark as well as the number — Cagle Rd, Double Tree Ct, or the school — because it saves a crew twenty minutes and it saves you a late arrival.
East Cheatham Elementary sits at 3201 Bearwallow Rd, and the two windows either side of the school day are worth avoiding for a truck towing a trailer. Mid-morning is the reliable slot on this road.
The lots out here are outside the town limits, so the town's rules on street trees have nothing to do with you. What matters instead is where your line runs, since eight-tenths-acre lots cut from a single field often have boundaries that follow nothing visible on the ground.

Can you work on the gravel pad by my barn, or will it damage it?
Gravel is the friendliest surface we deal with and a machine does it no harm at all. It is the ground either side of it that needs the thought, because a pad that has been there thirty years has usually spread, and the edge of it can be six inches of loose stone over soft ground. We stay on the compacted part and put boards down where we cross off it.
My locust keeps sending up shoots even though the tree is gone. Will grinding stop it?
It stops the stump producing them, which is most of the problem, but locust also shoots from roots that run well away from the base. The realistic outcome is far fewer shoots and them petering out over a season or two rather than none at all from the day we leave. Taking the plate out wide rather than levelling the top makes a genuine difference to how quickly that happens.
There are eleven cedars along my back fence line. What does that cost?
Considerably less per stump than one big tree, because cedar is soft and quick and they are all in a line so the machine barely moves. Cedar is dirty work rather than hard work: the material comes out stringy and there is a lot of it for the size of the stumps. Tell us at the quote whether you want it left along the fence or hauled, because on a count like that the volume is the variable.
I am not sure exactly where my line is out here. Does that matter?
It does if the stump is anywhere near it, which on a lot cut from one big field it often is. The county's parcel map will get you close enough for most purposes, and a neighbour who has been there since the plat opened will usually get you the rest of the way. We would rather spend ten minutes on that first than grind something that turns out not to have been yours.
